Introduction to Web 2.0

Web 2.0 is about online interactivity and linking people through web technologies.  In a sense Web 2.0 is a buzzword used to signify new and developing Web technologies. In addition to the widely recognized sites, there are also many thousands of websites that take advantage of Web 2.0 technologies.  The concept of Web 2.0 is a move away from static websites to a more interactive and dynamic World Wide Web.

Internet users no longer want a one-way interaction with a web page. Visitors are looking for a chance to get involved though user-friendly interface. Whether to leave comments upload photos share music or to be involved in a community, it is clear that the needs of the user are evolving as quickly as the Internet itself.

A Web 2.0 site gives its users the free choice to interact or collaborate with each other in a social media dialogue as creators of user-generated content in a virtual community, in contrast to websites where users (consumer) are limited to the passive viewing of content that was created for them.

The Rise of Web 2.0

The term began its rise in popularity when O’Reilly Media and MediaLive hosted the first Web 2.0 conference in 2004. In their opening remarks, John Battelle and Tim O’Reilly outlined their definition of the “Web as Platform”, where software applications are built upon the Web as opposed to upon the desktop.

Key Web 2.0 services/applications:

There are a number of Web-based services and applications that demonstrate the foundations of the Web 2.0 concept, and they are already being used to a certain extent in education.  These include social-networking sites, blogs, wikis, video-sharing sites, hosted services, content syndication, podcasting and content tagging services.     These are not really technologies as such, but services built using the building blocks of the technologies and standards of the Internet and the Web.

LinkedIn      (Relationships Matter)

LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site. Founded in December 2002 and launched in May 2003, it is mainly used for professional networking. As of 9 August 2010 (2010 -08-09), LinkedIn had more than 75 million registered users, spanning more than 200 countries and territories worldwide. The site is available in English, French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish.

  • The site has over 75 million members
  • A new member joins approximately every second
  • Executives from all Fortune 500 companies are members


With 75 million users, LinkedIn is ahead of its competitors Viadeo (30 million) and XING (9 million).  The membership grows by a new member approximately every second.  About half of the members are in the United States and 11 million are from Europe. With 3 million users, India is the fastest-growing country as of 2009.  The Netherlands has the highest adoption rate per capita outside the US at 30%.  LinkedIn recently reached 4 million users in UK and 1 million in Spain.


The purpose of the site is to allow registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know and trust in business. The people in the list are called Connections. Users can invite anyone (whether a site user or not) to become a connection.    LinkedIn also allows users to research companies with which they may be interested in working. When typing the name of a given company in the search box, statistics about the company are provided. These may include the ratio of female to male employees, the percentage of the most common titles/positions held within the company, the location of the company’s headquarters and offices, or a list of present and former employees.

The feature LinkedIn Answers, similar to Yahoo! Answers, allows users to ask questions for the community to answer. This feature is free and the main difference from the latter is that questions are potentially more business-oriented, and the identity of the people asking and answering questions is known.

The searchable LinkedIn Groups, feature allows users to establish new business relationships by joining alumni, industry, or professional and other relevant groups. LinkedIn groups can be created in any subjects and by any member of LinkedIn. Some groups are specialized groups dealing with a narrow domain or industry whereas others are very broad and generic in nature.

In October, 2008, LinkedIn revealed plans to opening its social network of 30 million professionals globally as a potential sample for business-to-business research. And, in doing so it’s testing a potential social-network revenue model-research that to some appears more promising than advertising.

 Application Platform

In October, 2008, LinkedIn enabled LinkedIn has launched its OpenSocial-based application platform called InApps – an answer to the platforms found on social networks like Facebook and MySpace which is called “applications platform” that allows other online services to be embedded within a member’s profile page. For example, among the initial applications were an Amazon Reading List that allows LinkedIn members to display books they are reading, a connection to Tripit, and a Six Apart, WordPress and TypePad application that allows members to display their latest blog postings within their LinkedIn profile.

Apps won’t be allowed to use third party ad networks – instead, they’ll have to work with LinkedIn’s ad system and will be allowed to charge users for individual goods, and can also implement a paid subscription service (launch partner Box.net is using this model).

LinkedIn and Business

LinkedIn is the most powerful social networking site to help grow business.  It differs from Twitter, Facebook and YouTube in that it focuses on business.     If someone (whether a professional or business owner) wants to hang with the big players—a place where connections are made, leads are generated, and deals go down—then he needs to spend more of his time on LinkedIn.      LinkedIn has become an essential tool for employers for headhunting and employee validating, and is used by business-to-business (B2B) marketers seeking for potential partners and buyers.

Business organizations usually generate and promote their business in LinkedIn by creating a company profile; it will list everyone who works there and some information about the company and make the company looks complete.

Business also starts groups and promotes them through discussions and asking questions.  With Groups, it can build thought leadership, share expertise, email newsletters, market its brand and grow its network.

Why Is the CFO Still Boss of IT?

As businesses expanded– and as technological innovation became more fast-paced–IT deployments have gone out from the old setup and spilled over to influence the way entire organizations carry out their work.

A recent Gartner survey, however, reveals that more and more IT organizations are finding themselves easing back into the old setup, especially due to the recent financial crisis and the fact that higher-ups are still stuck in the IT-as-a-cost-center conundrum.

In the survey of over 480 senior finance managers, 42% of IT organizations are already reporting to the CFO, while a staggering 53% prefer to move to this setup.

Gartner’s survey talked with finance controllers across the globe. Computerworld Philippines ran its own survey, asking local CIOs about reporting setups in their own companies. Of those surveyed, only 25% said they report to the CFO, while 65% report to their respective CEOs.

Of those CIOs who report to their CFOs, 80% said the setup has been beneficial to their company, while the remaining 20% said otherwise.

Surprisingly, all of those who responded that they are not currently reporting to the CFO said their IT organizations are better off under the CFO.

“Where the CIO should report is a question as old as the CIO role itself,” said John Van Decker, research vice president at Gartner. “CFO reporting can lead to success if the CFO has a deep understanding of IT’s value.”


In my personal openion (and experience), IT managers, CIOs should not report to the CFO as in my past experience this structure leads to influnce IT department to allocate most of the resources and budgets to achieve Financial departments goals and objectives.   Accordingly IT Department it self became finance aware only and loose an important value in being an essential resource to achieve the organization’s (as a whole) competitive advantage,  and sometimes it is used by finance as a tool to influence organization’s strategy.

Types of e-Commerce (EC)

What is e-commerce?

Electronic commerce, commonly known as e-commerce or eCommerce, or e-business consists of the buying and selling of products or services over electronic systems such as the Internet and other computer networks.    Modern electronic commerce typically uses the World Wide Web at least at some point in the transaction’s lifecycle, although it can encompass a wider range of technologies such as e-mail as well.

Types of e-commerce:

1.      B2B (Business-to-Business)

Companies doing business with each other such as manufacturers selling to distributors and wholesalers selling to retailers.  Pricing is based on quantity of order and is often negotiable.

Examples of B2B:

  • Alibaba (http://news.alibaba.com) based in Hangzhou, China which makes buyers and suppliers around the world to do business online
  • Euroffice (http://www.euroffice.co.uk) based in London, UK which is a supplier of stationery and office supplies online.
  • SpeedSend (http://www.speedsend.com) based in Cairo, Egypt which is a B2B procurement service for office & technology supplies

2.      B2C (Business-to-Consumer)

Businesses selling to the general public typically through catalogs utilizing shopping cart software.  They are companies offer their products or services for sale to consumers rather than to other businesses, as in B2B.    B2C often refers to the online selling of products, which is known as e-tailing.

Examples of B2C:

  • Amazon (http://www.amazon.com) the online bookseller based in Washington, USA.  It started as an online bookstore, but soon diversified, selling DVDs, CDs, computer software, electronics, apparel, furniture, food, and toys.
  • Souq (http://www.souq.com)  Member of Jabbar Internet Group.  It is an e-tailer working in UAE, Egypt, Jordan and KSA.  Souq.com describes itself as the channel where of buyers & sellers in the region meet on a daily basis to sell products over a trusted platform.
  • Bayt (http://www.bayt.com)  Bayt.com is an employment website or job search engine.   Based in Dubai, UAE
  • Otlob (http://www.otlob.com) and (http://www.otlobmall.com/) is an online food delivery services and online shopping mall.  Working in Egypt, KSA, UAE and Bahrian.

3.      C2B (Consumer-to-Business)

Business in the C2B business model represents any companies buying goods or services to individual through intermediaries.

For example, a consumer posts his project with a set budget online and within hours companies review the consumer’s requirements and bid on the project. The consumer reviews the bids and selects the company that will complete the project.   Or a company has a job to fill. The HR manager of the company signs up on the website and posts the job to his friends/relatives/employees. Everybody receiving the job offer can answer or forward it to their relatives. As soon as the job is filled, the reward is shared equally between each link of the referral chain. The referral hiring site takes care of every connection and receives a percentage of the reward.

Examples of C2B:

  • Google AdSense (https://www.google.com/adsense)  is a free, simple way for website publishers of all sizes to earn money by displaying targeted Google ads on their websites.
  • Elance (http://www.elance.com)  Online talent marketplace, helps companies hire and manage professionals online to get work done and grow their businesses.    Through it candidates start submitting proposals within hours, telling you what they can do and how much it will cost,  and companies compare profiles, experience, ratings, credentials and portfolios to select the best fit.
  • Linkedin (http://www.linkedin.com) which is a is a business-oriented social networking site allowin registered users to maintain a list of contact details of people they know.  They can pos their experience and area of work and then companies and recruiters can search for best fit for their needs.

4.      C2C (Consumer-to-Consumer)

Sites offering free classifieds, auctions, and forums where individuals can buy and sell with each other.

Examples of C2C:

  • eBay (http://www.ebay.com)  auction service where person-to-person transactions take place everyday.
  • e-Waseet (http://www.ewaseet.net) which is a free classified publication operates in 13 countries offering marketing services that provide advertising solutions for individuals and business organizations
  • Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org) is a centralized network of online communities, featuring free online classified advertisements – with sections

5.      B2E (Business-to-Employee)

Allows companies to provide products and/or services to their employees. Typically, companies use B2E networks to automate employee-related corporate processes.  Usually uses a portal customized for organization employees.  Examples also include employee’s online insurance policy, online employee benefits recording, and other services ordering offered for employees within an organization.

Examples of B2E:

  • SpeedSend (http://www.speedsend.com) based in Cairo, Egypt which allows employees within an organization to order office supplies directly.
  • TRICARE Online (https://www.tricareonline.com) is a web portal for authorized TRICARE beneficiaries provides employees of organizations with health related content, on-line health plan maintenance, appointment scheduling capability as well as pharmacy refill capability.
  • Humana’s Emphesys product (http://www.humana.com),  allows employers using Humana plan to manage their health benefits, claims, etc.)

6.      G2B (Government-to-Business)

Is the online non-commercial interaction between local and central government and the commercial business sector, rather than private individuals where businesses can get information and advice on business and supporting indicators.

7.      Mobile Commerce (M-Commerce)

Is the ability to conduct commerce, using a mobile device e.g. a mobile phone (cell phone), a PDA, or a Smartphone involving the transactions to transfer of ownership or rights to use goods and services, which is initiated and/or completed by using mobile access to computer-mediated networks.

Examples of M-Commerce:

  • Nordstrom’s mobile site (http://m.nordstrom.com) is pure m-commerce site which the entire shopping experience of Nordstrom’s web site takes place on the mobile web.
  • Masabi (http://www.masabi.com) builds mobile ticketing software for everyday mobile phones. The company’s Ticket Machine in your Pocket application allows travelers to select, purchase and display train tickets on their mobile phone, all via a rich graphical interface.

8.      Collaborative Commerce (C-commerce)

Optimization of supply and distribution channels in order to capitalize upon the global economy and use new technology efficiently.  It enables trading partners to create, manage, and use data in a shared environment to design, build, and support products throughout their lifecycle, working separately to leverage their core competencies together in a value chain that forms a virtual enterprise

Examples of C-commerce:

  • Exostar (http://www.exostar.com) is an electronic marketplace formed by the aerospace industry to optimize the time it takes to move parts and products. Member companies, which include Raytheon, Lockheed Martin and Boeing, also generate improved customer satisfaction because they can use Exostar to trace product availability through the supply chain.

9.      Electronic Learning (e-learning)

It is essentially the computer and network enabled transfer of skills and knowledge. E-learning refers to using electronic applications and processes to learn. E-learning applications and processes include Web-based learning, computer-based learning, virtual classrooms and digital collaboration. Content is delivered via the Internet, intranet/extranet, audio or video tape, satellite TV, and CD-ROM. It can be self paced or instructor led and includes media in the form of text, image, animation, streaming video and audio.

Examples of e-learning:

  • Egypt e-Learning University (http://www.eelu.edu.eg) which is private non-profit University providing distance education through 24-hour online learning with a vision to be a leading university providing e-learning nationally, regionally, and internationally.
  • The National e-Learning Center (http://www.nelc.edu.eg)  supports the development of e-learning in Egypt.

Introduction to Information Systems


0 Introduction


“In 1880, about nine out of 10 workers made and moved things; today, that is down to one out of five. The other four are knowledge people or service workers.”

At the start, in businesses and other organizations, internal reporting was made manually and only periodically, as a by-product of the accounting system and with some additional statistics, and gave limited and delayed information on management performances.

In their beginnings, business computers were used for the practical business of computing the payroll and keeping track of accounts payable and accounts receivable. As applications were developed that provided managers with information about sales, inventories, and other data that would help in managing the enterprise, the term “MIS” arose to describe these kinds of applications. Today, the term is used broadly in a number of contexts and includes (but is not limited to): decision support systems, resource and people management applications and database retrieval application.

In this paper I will try to explain what Information Systems are, with a brief history of computers. This paper will not discuss the technologies, but will explain why organizations need information systems.


1 Brief History

Early computers – mainframes – were too large and expensive to have broad application in business and in the 1960s; they became cost-effective and widely adopted. Initially, the mainframe had a purely supporting role, mostly in the accounting department. This was the era of Electronic Data Processing (EDP).

In the beginning of the 1980s IBM introduced the first Personal Computer (PC). Individuals used these machines in their home environment but soon they found their places in the offices and on the production floors. At first, the EDP professionals did not know how to cope with this event. Some simply ignored it and some began a war against these intruders. After a while, it became clear that the PC was there to stay. It took its place in the organization; first as a stand-alone workstation, but rapidly the need to act as a terminal for the mainframe arose.

A few years later, departmental computers and Local Area Networks (LANs) technologies allowed people to share information and work together in small workgroups or companywide. The old EDP department only had one “client” within the organization but the newly born IT department suddenly had to cope with the whole organization. The users of traditional EDP were specialists in their branch and were therefore well trained to work with these systems; the newcomers only had a limited knowledge of computers. So, specialized services like training classes and help desks had to be organized by the IT department. Information Technology supported almost every part of the business and the dependency of it increased dramatically. As IT covered more areas of the business, it was more used to get a better insight in the business and became part daily activities in many organizations.

Meanwhile, the communications technological evolution took place. People and their computers started to communicate and share information over networks and as few as three to four users – or as many as thousands – can access the same database or use the same computing resources concurrently within the organization or even between contents.



2 The role of IT / IS

Importance of Information for organizations

Today’s organizations are confronted with rapidly changing market conditions, indicated by strong competitors. Under these conditions, traditional management approaches that focus on financial figures and on centralized planning methods are considered to be insufficient for steering the organization in a dynamical environment.

Organizations all around the globe have to take the aid of information technology (IT) in some way or the other to keep themselves in sync with the market and the world. Different departments within organizations utilize IT to carry out their respective operations in a productive manner and efficient manner.

Organizations need to buy software packages that would cater to their specific management, operational, and functional needs. For this purpose, they need to approach IT firms who deal in such software applications.

Larger organizations on the other hand have their own operational and functional employees (IT staff) who develop software applications and work on several IT needs of the businesses. They usually purchase ERP software to coordinate different processes and functions into a single application, which is actually more convenient.

How IT is utilized for this purpose?

IT is used for storing, protecting, processing, securing, transmitting, receiving and retrieving information. In business establishments, information technology is used for solving mathematical and logical problems. Firstly, planning is done, data is collected, sorted and processed and finally, results are generated.

An Information System is an organized combination of People, information technologies and associated procedures that store, retrieves, transform and distribute information in an organization to support operations, management, and decision-making. It is not the technology only but also to the way in which people interact with this technology in support of business processes.

Information Systems are not necessarily computerized systems. Your book bag, the card catalog in library and the cash register in the restaurant are all example types of information systems.

How Information Systems can help Business?

1) Information Systems help to identify problems

Information systems often help business people determine that a problem exists and some action needs to be taken. For example, the inventory system at an organization flags items that need to be recorded, signaling to department managers that action is needed.

2) Information System provide current facts

Information systems show exactly what is currently happening and where we stand at this moment. Typical system output is composed of a variety of reports that meet the needs of various employees for information about the company’s performance. For example, sales people can determine whether the company has a certain product in stock, or they can receive a report at any time during the day to see exactly how much of their quota has been completed to that point.

3) Information Systems communicate Goals and Standards

Information Systems communicate company standards about what is supposed to be happening. Built into company reports is information about company standards. For example, indicators to flag performance that is outside the standard.

4) Information Systems facilitate interpersonal communication

Information systems facilitate communication among groups of business people who share responsibility for decision making. Information systems frequently provide such groups with a common body of information to be considered. Information systems reduce the amount of time that busy people must spend in face-to-face meetings.

As we explained earlier, Information Systems are not necessarily computerized systems. But now the information systems are computerized systems (computers are used to enhance systems) for the following reasons:

  • Computers can Calculate: Large amount of calculations and mathematical operations in a fraction of time.

  • Computers can Store and Retrieve Data: Huge data (Text, numbers, images …) stored and retrieved from media in a very high speed.

  • Computers can Communicate: Computers share data between each other and gives ability to people to share knowledge as well.



3 Information Systems for Business success

Today’s organizations rely on computerized Information Systems for planning and controlling the performance of business processes and give managers the ability to utilize the collected data from daily and routine transactions to be analyzed and processed into useful understandable information which is then communicated to the various departments in an organization.

Information Systems are found in three vital roles:

  • Support for business processes and operations.

  • Support for decision making by managers.

  • Support for strategies for competitive advantage.

There are two major types of the information systems; Operations Support and Management Support Systems.

Support for business processes and operations:

First, we need to understand some definitions:

A business model is the method of doing business and represents core aspects of a business, including purpose, offerings, strategies, infrastructure, organizational structures, trading practices, and operational processes and policies.

A business process is a collection of related, structured activities that produce a specific service or product for a customer or customers. There are three main types of business processes:

  1. Management processes, the processes that govern the operation of a system.

  2. Operational processes, the processes that constitute the core business and create the primary value stream.

  3. Supporting processes, which support the core processes.

A workflow is a description of a sequence of operations. Workflow may be seen as abstraction of real work, segregated for control purposes.

With the business growth to be multi-functional / multi-location, organizations had to promote business effectiveness and efficiency with control while striving for innovation, flexibility, and integration with technology. That is what is called Business Process Management (BPM).

BPM enables business to respond to changing consumer, market, and regulatory demands faster than competitors – creating competitive advantage. Some people view BPM as “the bridge between Information Technology (IT) and Business.

There are four major components of an information system supporting business processes:

  • Process Engine – a platform for modeling and executing process-based applications according to a workflow definition, including business rules.

  • End user applications – which enable employees and operational staff to execute the process governed by the workflow rules.

  • Business Analytics — enable managers to identify business issues, trends, and opportunities with reports and dashboards and react accordingly. Executed on the application servers and client PC’s

  • Content Management — provides a system for storing and securing electronic documents, images, and other files.

  • Collaboration Tools — remove intra- and interdepartmental communication barriers through discussion forums, dynamic workspaces, and message boards.

Business operations are recurring activities or day-to-day tasks involved in the running of a business for the purpose of producing value for the stakeholders. They consist of business processes.

All businesses deal with production, inventory management, billing, etc. Each of these operations is a Business Process and is integrated and impacts one another. For example, if products are not produced and delivered, then billing cannot happen. An operations manager overall responsibility is to see that all operations run smoothly and he uses information systems to achieve this goal (to manage business processes and to integrate them).

Routine Business Operations are managed by several types of information Systems such as the Transaction Processing Systems (TPS) which record and process the data resulting from business transactions, Process Control Systems (PCS) which monitor and control physical processes in manufacturing, and Collaboration Systems which enhance team and workgroup productivity.



Support for decision making by manager

Decision making is an outcome of processes leading to the selection of a course of action among several alternatives. Every decision making process produces a final choice. The output can be an action or an opinion of choice.

Four steps in rational decision making process:

  1. Intelligence: identify problems & opportunities, define objectives, criteria for success.

  2. Design: develop and evaluate alternatives

  3. Choice: prioritize, and select one or more alternatives

  4. Implement and evaluate: implement the choice and monitor success

There are two types of decisions:

  • Unstructured or Semi-structured decisions:

Straightforward problems, requiring known facts and relationships

  • Structured Decisions:

Relationships among data are not always clear, the data may be in a variety of formats and sometimes from external sources (outside the organization)


DSS Systems

The type of information required by decision makers is directly related to the level of management and the amount of structure in the decision situations.

Tools are needed to facilitate decision making processes. These tools can be classified as Decision Support Systems (DSS) which serve the management level of the organization and help to take decisions, which may be rapidly changing and not easily specified in advance.

A DSS is an interactive software-based system intended to help decision makers compile useful information from a combination of raw data, documents, personal knowledge, or business models to identify and solve problems and make decisions. It helps avoiding a situation where you say ‘ if I knew that before I would have decide it differently ‘. DSS are integrated with other information systems through a common database.

DSS characteristics include: Handling large amounts of data from different sources, providing report and presentation flexibility, offering both textual and graphical orientation and supporting drill down analysis. DSS also performs “What-if” analysis and simulation.

  1. The database (raw data from other systems)

  2. The model (decision context and user criteria)

  3. The user interface.

  4. The output reports

The users themselves are also important components of the DSS architecture.

Examples of DSSs include a bank loan officer verifying the credit of a loan applicant or an engineering firm that has bids on several projects and wants to know if they can be competitive with their costs. The Spreadsheet on your PC is also a Desktop DSS.

DSS is extensively used in business and management. Executive dashboard and other business performance software allow faster decision making, identification of negative trends, and better allocation of business resources. A good DSS include high-level summary reports or charts and allow the user to drill down for more detailed information.






Support of strategies for competitive advantage

A competitive advantage is an advantage over competitors gained by offering consumers greater value, either by means of lower prices or by providing greater benefits and service that justifies higher prices. There are some business strategies that could be adopted in order to gain competitive advantage and relate to the business activities and to which a business seeks to differentiate its products.

To achieve the goal of competitive advantage and revenue increase, basic strategies are developed and supported by information systems:

  • Cost Leadership Strategy:

Becoming a low-cost producer and services in the industry and finding ways to help suppliers or customers reduce their costs or increase the cost of competitors.

  • Differentiation Strategy:

Differentiate the company’s products and services from its competitors by developing new IT features and use them to reduce the differentiation advantages of competitors.

  • Growth Strategy:

Expand the company’s capacity to produce goods and providing services, Expanding into global markets, and integrating into related products. Use IT to manage regional and global business expansion.

  • Innovation Strategy:

Create new products and services that include IT components. Make changes to business processes with IT that dramatically cut costs. Improve quality, efficiency of customer service using automated IT solutions.

  • Alliance Strategy:

Use IT to create virtual organizations of business partners. Develop inter-enterprise information systems linked by Internet and extranet that support strategic relationships with customers, suppliers and others.

In business, information systems are used through the Value Chain of activities which in turn enable the organization to optimize and control function of operations.   • Combining value chain data it is possible for management to make better-informed decisions in deploying the right people, investments, equipment, and assets for the right activities at the right time.

Although IT & IS has become more of a commodity, when coupled with
complementary changes in organization and management, it can provide the
foundation for new products, services, and ways of conducting business that
provide firms with a strategic advantage.
